What is the value of a liberal arts education?
“It’s important to understand our place in society, how we interact with each other, and the ramifications of our actions. We don’t exist as individuals, but in a larger society. [The liberal arts] aims to understand how we fundamentally interact and exist with each other. Regardless of your career, you need to be aware of the consequences of your actions. We should care about other people.”
What advice would you give to current and future UT students?
“Always shoot your shot. Do cold emails. Do cold LinkedIn messages. If something looks interesting, apply. I was sitting on my couch with a paper due at 9:00 AM that I had not started, debating whether I should apply to the House Judiciary Committee. It took me a few seconds to write the cover letter, and I submitted the application an hour before it was due. I ended up working there for 2 years. The universe will bring things to you, and it might not be what you think it looks like. Put yourself out there and what you need will come to you.”
